I hope I spelled it right. Anyway, I was
woundering if anyone has large detailed drawing of it. I wouldn't mind
building one either on one of Lee Upshaw's Yamato hulls, or one from scratch,
but larger (after I move later this year).

About 18 months ago I bought an excellent set
of 1/350 plans and drawings for Shinano from Pacific Front models (see link).
The set was about $20.

Shokaku plans and references?

Hi, I am looking to build a 1/192 model of the
Shokaku as she looked in late 1943 and am casting about for suitable refernces.
I purchased (about 5 minutes ago!) the Gakken and Photo-file books on the ship
from HLJ. Does anyone know of other good references/plans for her or painting
details of her aircraft?

The Gakken Refences are as good as it gets; if
you didn't purchase the hardcover in addition to the softcover, I would urge
you do so. They complement each other in terms of coverage. There is other
material out there on these CVs but nothing is as good for model building. I
suggest contacting the IJN aircraft board on this site for additional aircraft
details. I'm certain you'll learn more than you were prepared to from these
folks; they've really got a handle on the research.

Do you have a good set of drawings? If not
contact me directly by e-mail. I would also suggest that you build the model
in 1/200 scale, as you will be able to use some of the Nichimo parts, from the
DD and Yamato kits. Also there is a book in the Grand Prix series, which is
where the Tamiya "Random Detail" books came from, that is
specificaly on the Japanese carriers. I may have some drawings (originals) on
the bridge structure, also.

From Pacific Front Hobbies I found 1/200th
plans of the Shokaku from MIYUKIKAI (MYCO). Does anyone know if they are a
good set?

I ordered the Zuikaku plan because the Shokaku
plan was out of stock. It is more detailed than I expected. It maybe hard to
read at first because the drawings overlap. I think they did this to put as
much detail they can and I think it is a good idea. It has two sheets of 4.5 x
2 feet with only 1 side drawn on. If I have only one choice of reference to
use then this is it.
I-201 Submarine plans

Does anyone know of any good sources for
plans/pictures of the Japanese late war I-201 submarines (the counterpart to
the German XXI's)? I've got "Submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy
which has a fair side view, but not enough for a 1/72nd model.

I have a book named "Japanese Secret
Weapons of W.W.ll" journal "Ground Power" special issue
November 2000. This book include part of Type I-200th submarines. But this
books was written in Japanese.
I-200th submarines was the counterpart to the
German XXI's as you said(those days, they had no communication about XXI or
XXIII). In October, 1943, Type I-200th was projected as high speed(in
hydrospase) submarine on the basis of 71th ship (200tons class experimental
high speed submarine). Four torpedo tube equiped on bow. All I-200th were not
sallied.
I-201/ completion in February, 1945-> cade
to US.
I-202/ completion in February, 1945->
abandon at Sasebo offshore.
I-203/ completion in May, 1945-> cade to US.
I-204/ 90% completion-> sunk by bomb attack
at Kure in June, 1945.
I-205/ 80% completion-> broke by bomb attack
at Kure in March, 1945.
I-206/ completion in March, 1945-> unclear.
I-207/ 20% completion-> work stoped.
I-208/ 5% completion-> work stoped.
I-209~223/ groundbreaking stoped.

The Japanese monthly magazine, which I beleive
may be called "Ships of the World" did a special entitled
"History of the Japanese Submarine" in their 1993 No. 469 issue. The
entire 148 pages is about Japanese WW2 submarines and in the back part is a
10" by 18" foldout plan of the
"""interior""" (nine cross sections, two plans
and one profile) of the I-201 class submarine dated from 1945. If you would
like a couple of copies of it, please email me your address and I will send
you the copies for FREE. By the way, on the other side is the best plan and
profile of the """exterior""" of the I-400 class
submarine I have ever seen. I can send a couple of copies of the I-400 plan
also if you would like them for the same ridiculus high price as mentioned
above. I await your answer, and have a Merry Christmas if I don' hear from
you. I hope Santa brings you lots of great submarine treats. Must go now and
feed my little Rudolf and all his buddies, before the big run tonight at
midnight. Bye - The Submarine Santa (also known to the payroll dept. as Jim

Pleased to find this message board. Have built
a few IJN models since USN service at Yokosuka in 1955-56.Work in wood and
brass only. The process of construction is the pleasure, not the product.
Would like to start Mogami @1:200 have Mogami plans purchased at Japanese
hobby shop in 55 but those plans not accurate or detailed enough for first
quality work. Seeking source of plans comparable to Kulski's Yamato and Takao
books.

In the absence of a Gakken book on the subject,
and without knowing if you have a Miyayuki set of plans, I can only suggest
Lacroix and Wells "Janese Cruisers of the Pacific War" as a
reference. There is a well-detailed chapter on the Mogamis with detailed
diagrams based on the authors' up-to-date research but, no drawings to scale.
Also, try contacting Pacific Front Hobbies and see if Bill Gruner can suggest
anything.

Shinano plans

I am planning a conversion of the Nichimo 1/200
scale Yamato to the Shinano to go along w/ the Yamato
kit built previously.
I've found only 1 plan for the ship, that from the Weiswesser collection of
drawings. Anything better available?

Contact Pacific Front Hobbies at
www.pacificfront.com. They sell a sheet of plans by Miyukikai of Shinano in
1/350 scale. I can't certify the accuracy. I have used a corresponding set of
plans for Taiho and have found alignment errors between views. I also have the
Shinano plans and don't see any immediate problems.

I suggest purchasing Gakken # 22 on the Taiho
and Shinano. There's a comprehensive set of longitudinal plans in 1/875,
cross-section plans in 1/500 (28+ frames), the excellent 1/300 model with
dozens of perspectives, alternate paint schemes, and a review/photos of the
new 1/700 Tamiya Shinano. While the 1/875 scale is small, it's much more
detailed then the 1/350 Miyuki plan of the Taiho (which I have).

There are also what appear to be reasonable
plans in the Axis volume of the 3-book Battleships of WW2 series, from Naval
Institute Press I believe. I'll have to look at them again to see how good
they are, but I remember them being reasonable. I'll check on them.

The book is "Battleships: Axis and Neutral
Battleships in World War II" by William Garzke, jr.and Robert Dulin, jr.
from NIP. It has one photo and 2 sketches, as well as an inboard/armor profile
and an outboard and topside view that are quite nice.
