Ki-48II Interior Color

TAIC Report #34 "Metallurgical Examination of "Oscar" and "Lily" Armor plate mentions that the cockpit armor plate behind the pilot's seat of the Lily II was "coated on both sides with a khaki-color phenolic varnish". This interior paint may therefore have been common to all Kawasaki aircraft as a similar color has also been described as being found on interior surfaces of the Ki-61.

Hasegawa KI-48-II

I just got the new KI-48-II from HLJ. Well I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Many moons ago when I was checking out the Mania KI-48-I ( now in release by Hasegawa ), I figured I could make a -II by reversing the upper and lower scoops and intakes. Well Guess what? Some one at Hasegawa figured out the same thing! The kit appears to be identical to the earlier release with that change in the directions. Drill one hole and fill another. The decals options are possibily the only saving grace. It includes two options, one from the 90th Army group, 3rd sq. 1943-44 China (green and grey) and 208th Army group, 1944 Philippines (grey with greem mottling, the one often pictured with a white band and 4 white dts on the tail).
So, if you have a spare -I you can make a -II from it.

Hi Bil and y'all,
Sorry to be the trouble maker here but as far as I can remember the real Ki 48-II had its fuselage stretched a bit... i don't remember how long and I've not my documentation at hand so I don't know if the stretching does really matter in 1/72nd scale but anyway Hasegawa is not doing its job properly this time...
Happy modeling anyway...

Hey welcome back!
You are correct! According to Francillon, the -II is 150mm (about 6 inches) longer. This translates to about 2mm in 1/72.

Hmmmm... That's interesting... According to my Maru Mechanic, the dimensions of Ki 48 I and II are identical. I wonder which info is true? Are there any Ki 48 I and II lying around that we can measure?

There is one in a museum in China. I'd happy to go and measure it if someone would send planefare.

Concerning the Chinese Ki-48, as I recall, until 1991 that plane consisted of only a rusted out forward fuselage-no wings, no tail, nothing but the cockpit and nose. It sat on its side for years next to a bunch of Yaks The Chinese rebuilt it using who knows what for parts. At present it looks inaccurate.

Did they add the dive brakes under the wings ?
Apart from the carb intakes I think that was the only other way you could tell a -1 from a -11.
Happy modelling

Richard,
no, they didn´t change the mould at all! That was the biggest surprise of them all when I got my Ki-48 "II". I expected a new runner with engine cowlings, air intakes, new MG 15-style guns and dive breakes, but the moulds are complete unmodified! The decal sheet is nice, but at 1400 Yen compared to the Ki-48-I at 1000 Yen I do feel being ripped off by Mr. H!!!
