Well folks, with Aeromaster being a dead deal and Phil's Hobbies being out of it, does anyone have a mix formula for Blue-Black for a Zero.
Thanks in advance,
~S.

Here's one you can try. Before Aeromaster came out with their blue-black paint, they recommended using WWII US Navy Dark Sea Blue, the same as used on late war Hellcats and Corsairs. I've tried it on some of my earlier models and compared it with ones painted with the Aeromaster blue black. After its sprayed with a semi gloss and weathered you can't tell the difference. I was using Aeromaster paints all around. But you could start by using your favorite mix for the US Navy color and experiment from there.

Hi, Sean,
On my PH Zero and Val, I used something like a ratio of 10 drops matte black, two drops matte white and one drop FS 35044 Insignia Blue, all paints being Modelmaster and the ratio being of the "sorta in the ballpark" type. Now, it looks all right to me, but I certainly would not go to the wall and state that it is an absolutely accurate mix. Best to call it a "start point for discussion." HTH

Hello y'all,
Be careful that blue black was a MITSUBISHI ONLY color for antiglare panels...
Other manufacturers seem to have preferred a gray black (a black with a SMALL amount of white without bluish cast).
As for a good color match on models I personally use US Insignia Blue (darker than the camouflage color of planes) with semi gloss varnish to give it sheen. (Humbrol once made the shade, I don't know if they still have the reference for Insignia Blue)... This of course for a relatively new aircraft... Gary's mix might be better for a much used (weathered) one.
Happy modeling.

Mark,
I use enamel paints exclusively. My mix for Mitsubishi cowl blue-black is 50% Testors flat black and 50% Testors USN Dark Sea Blue. I use Testors Semi-Gloss lacquer as clear finish coat. Even though the cowls were finished in gloss paint, a gloss finish looks to cartoonish to me in 1/48 scale. Just my opinion.

Hi Mark,
I use the following mix of Gunze paints: H12 Flat Black 50 % + H 5 Blue 40% + H 1 White 10 %. Comparable mixes of paints by other manufacturers should show similar results. Looks great on the cowls of Mitsubishi-built A6M´s!
HTH,
Joern
